One of the lift cables was about to break.
We checked the tracks to make sure they were both fastened properly and the torsion spring to rule it out as a possible culprit. The problem turned out to be that one of the two lift cables was in bad shape and looked like it would break very soon, so we replaced it and adjusted the door to make sure it would open and close evenly.
